WordPress Plugins Recommended For All Blogs

Posted on June 20th, 2008 in Web Development by WebGuru

WordPress Plugins add great features and functionality to your blog. There are hundreds of great plugins and over 2000 all together, with even more in development. I’d like to go over a few recommended plugins I think every blog should have. We use these plugins on our site and have had great success with them. Most of these WordPress plugins can be downloaded from WordPress - Extend - Plugins.

Adsense Manager - Control and arrange your AdSense & Referral blocks on your WordPress blog. With Sidebar Widgets and inline post support, configurable colors, and more, AdSense Manager is great for easily managing and moving your Adsense units around.

All in One SEO Pack - Easily manage your site and individual post meta tags with new built-in fields for titles, descriptions, keywords, tags and more. Easily optimize your blog from one location and optimize each post individually on the post’s write/edit page. This is a great SEO tool must have.

Exec-PHP - Allows PHP code to be placed in Posts, Pages and Text Widgets. Useful for custom widgets and other PHP features.

Google XML Sitemaps - Every site needs a sitemap. An easy way to make one is with this plugin, which will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO.

Now here are some other Plugins we use and recommend, which we think add some great features and functionality. Some may not be for you and your blog, and there are still many other great plugins not listed here, they just aren’t what we wanted for our blog. But here are a few I think everyone should have.

Admin Drop Down Menu - Replaces admin menu and submenu with a 2 level horizontal CSS dropdown menu bar. Gives you full access to most admin pages with a single click. Saves lots of clicks! I’ve also made some modifications to make it work better, which you can find on the creators site comments, soon I will post it here too.

AJAX Login - Adds a widget that allows all login/registration functions to be accessed with out reloading the page. You no longer have a separate login/registration page. Login, logout, register, admin, forgot password - all available without reloading the page. This invites the user to go ahead and register since it’s easier and already displayed.

HidePost - Give your readers another reason to register, give them a taste of the post, then hide the good parts until they register. Protect a part of your post by adding tags around the content to be hidden.

New User Email Set Up - A Plugin to setup the registration email sent to new users. Let’s you customize the email that is sent out when a user registers. Instead of the plain user name and password email, you can add a welcome message, some quick links, or even an ad for one of your products or affiliate links.

Tagalize It - Easily tag your post with Technorati tags and more to your posts. Create tagged text by enclosing the text to be tagged in one of the following. [TAG-Tec] [Tag-Ice] and [Tag-self]

Tag Managing Thing - A thing for easily managing your tags for your whole site. Things like renaming tags and tag deletions.

Text Link Ads - A service that make it easy for people to buy ad space on your site.

WP-Sticky - Adds sticky posts and announcement posts feature to your WordPress blog. We mainly use it for the Announcement feature, which makes the post always stay at the top of your blog. Sticky posts stay on top for the day, so if you have several post each day, this would also be useful for you.

WP-UserOnline - It’s always good to know who’s viewing your blog, and this plugin enables you to display how many users are online on your WordPress blog with detailed statistics of where they are and who they are(Members/Guests/Search Bots).

The plugins I listed above are only a few that I recommend for everyone. There are several we use which I left out, and numerous more available for different purposes. You’ll have to browse them to find features and utilities that you want for your site.

I’d like to note that we do not recommend WordPress 2.5 at this time and the Plugins listed here may not be available for WordPress 2.5. Another reason to hold off on upgrading WordPress, at ANY time, is backwards compatibility problems with older plugins. Given the choice between removing plugins to upgrade WordPress or keeping your plugins and sticking with an older version of WordPress, I’ll always chose the latter until security issues become too vulnerable. Check back often for more Wordpress plugin features.
